Checking In: A Luxury Experience at The Modern Honolulu
There are hotels that offer a convenient place to check your stuff while you're out exploring, and then there are those that offer enough luxury that you don't mind hanging about the hotel all day. The Modern Honolulu is the latter. We searched nearly every hotel in the area, and found that this hotel not only had decently priced rooms but also checked many of the boxes on our checklist!
The hotel rooms at the Modern are warm and inviting with subtle decor accented with pops of color and plenty of natural light. Most rooms offer a spectacular view of the harbor which gives you prime seating for the firework show every Friday night. The beds are for the most part comfortable, I would have liked a better mattress but I am famously very picky when it comes to where I sleep. All in all, we were extremely happy with our room.
In addition to it's location right in town and adjacent to the beach, the Modern boasts two pools (one kid-friendly and one adult-only) with cabanas, a fitness center, and outdoor yoga classes. Though we didn't have a chance to stop in for a massage, we caught a glimpse of the spa and it definitely looked top of the line.
Upon checking in, we were immediately able to check-in (early of all things too), and the extremely helpful concierge service helped us with a car rental (they have a couple that keep on property with a local rental company that you can rent out), restaurants, and options for stand-up rentals. They never made us wait more than a few minutes to be helped.
The Grove cafe offers a yummy brunch (albeit a little pricey at $35/person), it's a great option for one morning when you want to splurge. Try the beef brisket and coconut yogurt parfait! The Grove + Passageway also offer food and drink by the pool. Order a pina colada while lounging in your cabana and you'll be pleasantly surprised with the horchata version they serve up, which somehow feels healthier than the sugary concoction I normally get. Gluten free travelers will also appreciate the multiple GF options available. I could not get enough of the chopped salad with green goddess dressing, I think I ate it every time we were by the pool. While we didn't dine at the hotel for dinner (just too many options in town), the Modern offers a Japanese fusion restaurant with reasonably priced options (for Hawaii).
During the day, the Study is just a bookshelf that stands beside the concierge. But at night, the wall swings open to reveal a speak-easy style hidden room with lush ottomans, melt-into-me chairs and a full bar. Enjoy live music from 7-10pm and a sophisticated selection of bar food with organic, locally sourced ingredients.
Stop into the hotel's gift shop and you'll find a selection of quality bikinis and coverups (you know, just in case you didn't pack enough), posh little souvenirs, and an endless supply of Sunbum suntan lotion (my absolute FAVORITE). The hotel also offers complementary Sunbum by the pool in case you forget yours. It's a small but appreciated gesture when your skin is starting to get crispy and your emergency stash runs out.
