Our First Liebster Award
We are so honored to receive our first Liebster Award from Diana and Hope of MVMT Blog, our favorite pair of sisters who travel the world to exotic destinations like Africa, South America and Europe, keeping us on our toes with the hottest local delicacies (#sharksgiving) and invoking some serious wanderlust envy. "When I told Mike we were nominated for a Liebster Award, he called it the Lobster Award. LOL"
What is the Liebster Award?
When I told Mike we were nominated for a Liebster Award, he called it the Lobster Award, lol. Then I realized I didn't even really know what a Liebster was. So I did a little research (aka asked MVMT Blog). The Liebster Award was started back in 2011 as an online-only award given to bloggers by bloggers. The award is a way for newer blogs to be discovered and also to connect with and support the blogging community. “Liebster” in German means “dearest,” so we are humbled having been nominated for this dearest award by our fellow bloggers.
Many of you may not know, but we just launched our blog in August, here's a little bit more on the story of how we got started.
Here are our answers to MVMT Blog’s questions:
1. Why did you decide to become a travel blogger?
I wanted the tax write offs... just kidding.. maybe.
My husband and I love to travel and I love to write, take pictures, and share advice on our experiences, so a blog seemed like a logical passion project because, you know, everyone in LA needs a side hustle. It's a requirement to live here. Along with owning a Prius.
2. Is blogging your full time job, or do you work a full time job on the side?
I blog part time and just launched a creative marketing consultancy a few months ago. I work with clients on content strategy, blogging, social media, branding and making cool stuff that allows a company to stand out from their competition. I feel extremely lucky to be able to do what I love and get paid for it everyday!
3. What is the most scenic destination you’ve traveled to?
It's so difficult to select, we've been to some pretty incredible places. I absolutely love Tahiti though. I've sailed through it twice, and it boggles my mind how beautiful it is. It's like stepping into a postcard, the ocean is incredibly clear and there's fish there that haven't even been discovered yet.
4. Where did you receive your biggest cultural shock?
When I was a teenager, I went to Istanbul with my family. Whilst walking through the Grand Bazaar, I had a man approach my grandpa about purchasing his wife (ME), for 3 chickens and a cow. In addition to being a little insulted (I'm worth at least 10 chickens), I was amazed that at 13 I was mistaken as the wife of my 60 year old grandpa. Growing up in LA you'd think I'd be used to that ;).
5. Do you speak any foreign languages? Which ones?
I speak a little high school Spanish and a little French. But mostly I know only the bare essentials to get me by ... i.e. How much does this cost? Does this come in any other colors? etc.
6. What is your biggest travel fail moment?
I took a road trip from Houston to Nashville once and got completely turned around on the wrong highway, which took me 2 hours off my path. Wooopsies!
7. Do you prefer staying in hotels, hostels, airbnb, couchsurfing, or something else?
We stick mainly to hotels, airbnb and every now and again some unique accommodations like this refurbished 18th century farmhouse we stayed in while on our honeymoon in Provence.
What’s the most bizarre food you’ve eaten while traveling?
I've eaten octopus in Greece, that's about as strange as I can recall at the moment. BTW, it tastes just like chicken.
What is your best advice for traveling on a budget?
A friend just told me about this site called Secret Flying where she bought a round-trip ticket to Stockholm for like $300, no black out dates, etc. I haven't tried it out yet, but I'm anxious to.
Where are you off to next?
As I write this, I'm waiting for a flight to board to San Francisco. We are also headed to Portland soon and taking a small babymoon in Lake Tahoe in February.
