Apple Picking in California
Fall is in full swing (finally), and one of our favorite activities this time of year is apple picking in California! It's a fun, festive way to enjoy the season on a lazy Sunday, especially if you have kids. There's lots of activities to keep the little ones occupied and plenty of apple-flavored treats for the whole family.
Where to Go Apple Picking in California
Situated in the hills of San Bernardino, about 90 minutes from Downtown Los Angeles, Oak Glen's lush orchards are an ideal place to pick apples. The orchards are fairly close in proximity, making it easy to hop around to a few different properties in one afternoon. For our visit, we went stuck to two main properties: Los Rios Rancho and Snow Line Orchard. Both are so beautiful, with colorful trees, apple tasting areas, and plenty of family-friendly activities. Plus, they're about a 5 minute drive from each other.
Plan for Your Trip
The best time to go apple-picking in Oak Glen is in late October through November. Early October can still be extremely hot in the inland area, which can put a damper on your sweater-clad activities. We opted to go on a Sunday afternoon the second weekend of November, with a perfect 68 degree sunny day awaiting us.
I recommend dressing in casual layers, thinks leggings/jeans and a tee with a sweater or cardigan you can easily take off if it starts to warm up. If you have kiddos, have them wear tennis shoes as opposed to sandals as most of the areas have dirt paths. Steer away from anything too dressy or white. Remember to pack a cute basket to put your apples in too!
Where to Eat in Between Picking Apples
Los Rios Rancho has an incredible Applewood BBQ joint that, although quite popular, is totally worth the wait! The hubs and I each ordered pulled pork sandwiches with potato and coleslaw salad, a bag of chips, and a couple of root beers - the perfect country style lunch. Afterwards, we hit up Snow Line Orchard for some apple-cider donuts that are too good to even attempt to describe, so here's a picture instead.
Additional Family Activities at the Apple Orchards
Most of the properties in Oak Glen offer some fun kids activities for kids like pony rides, horse drawn carriages through the orchard, cider pressing, etc. There's also a great selection of pumpkins there if you're going closer to Halloween. Some properties also have live music and specialty wines and beer for the adults. Also, there's some little boutiques where you can pick up fresh honey, decor items, wine bottles, and (naturally) plenty of apple flavored goodies to take home with you.
This coming weekend is the Apple Butter Festival! Check out a schedule of events here.
